What Is Private DNS on Android—and Should You Turn It Off?

If you have explored Android's network settings, you may have found a setting called Private DNS.

For most people, there is no reason to turn it off.

Google recommends keeping Private DNS enabled. On supported networks, it helps protect the DNS requests your phone makes when translating website and service names into the network addresses needed to reach them.

What Private DNS protects

DNS is part of the process your phone uses to locate internet services.

Traditional unencrypted DNS can expose those lookups to parties along the network path. Private DNS provides protection for those DNS questions and answers.

But there is an important limitation: Private DNS is not a VPN.

Google explicitly notes that it secures only DNS questions and answers. It does not protect everything else your phone sends over the internet.

Where to find the setting

On Google's standard Android instructions, open:

Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS

You can normally choose among Off, Automatic, or Private DNS provider hostname.

For an ordinary user who has no particular DNS provider to configure, leaving the feature at its normal automatic setting is generally the simplest approach.

Android manufacturers sometimes rearrange Settings, so search Settings for Private DNS if that path is not present.

Be careful with custom provider names

The provider-hostname option is useful when you intentionally want to use a particular compatible DNS service.

Do not paste a random hostname from a social-media post or an unfamiliar website into this box simply because someone claims it will make your internet faster or safer.

Changing DNS can affect whether websites and services resolve correctly, and a DNS provider is in a position to handle your DNS queries.

If a custom setting causes connection problems, returning Private DNS to Automatic is a straightforward troubleshooting step.

Private DNS is useful privacy infrastructure, but it should not be confused with total anonymity or complete internet protection.
