Android Theft Protection Is More Than Just Find My Device

Finding a missing Android phone is important, but modern Android theft protection goes beyond showing a device on a map.

Google has added several protections intended to make a stolen phone less useful to someone who has it and to protect your data while you try to recover the device.

Theft Detection Lock

On supported devices, Theft Detection Lock can use device signals to detect motion associated with someone taking a phone and moving away. When Android detects a likely theft event, it can lock the screen.

No automated detection system is perfect, so this feature should be viewed as an additional layer rather than a guarantee.

Offline Device Lock

A thief may try to disconnect a phone from the internet. Offline Device Lock can automatically lock a supported phone after it has been offline under certain conditions.

Remote Lock and Find Hub

Google also provides ways to locate, secure or erase a missing Android device remotely. Availability and exact options depend on the phone, Android version and account configuration.

These features work best when they are configured before the phone disappears.

Check your settings while you still have the phone

Open Settings and search for Theft protection. On supported Android versions, review the protections offered on your device.

Also make sure you can sign into your Google Account from another device. Recovery tools are much less useful if you discover during an emergency that you cannot get into the account controlling them.

A strong screen lock, current software, theft-protection features and recoverable account access work together. None of them should be treated as a replacement for the others.
