Why Your Wi-Fi Works on Your Phone but Not Your Laptop

Wi-Filaptopnetwork troubleshooting

If your phone connects but your laptop does not, the laptop may have a device-specific problem. First make sure the phone is actually using the same Wi-Fi network rather than cellular data.

## Verify the comparison Temporarily disable cellular data on the phone and check that it can still open a website over Wi-Fi. Confirm that both devices are using the same network name, not separate guest networks.

## Reconnect the laptop Turn Wi-Fi off and back on. Make sure airplane mode is off. Reconnect and open a website: a Wi-Fi icon alone does not prove internet access.

## Restart Save your work and restart the laptop. Temporary network-service or adapter problems may clear without changing the router.

## Forget the saved connection On Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks. Select the affected network and choose Forget. Make sure you know the password before doing this. Reconnect and test again. Menu labels can vary by Windows version.

## Test another trusted network Try a trusted hotspot or another network. If the laptop connects elsewhere, examine the home router's configuration or compatibility. If it fails on multiple networks, investigate the laptop's adapter, driver and network settings. Use the laptop maker's official driver support page when necessary.

## Leave disruptive resets until last A full network reset can remove saved configurations and require reconnecting VPNs or other network software. Do not reset the router or Windows networking simply because another device works.

The bottom line: establish whether the problem follows the laptop before changing the whole household network.
