Before a Windows Update Says There Isn't Enough Space, Check This Screen
A Windows update sometimes needs more free storage than you expect. If Windows says there is not enough room, resist the temptation to start deleting random system files.
Microsoft recommends starting with Windows' own storage tools. Open Settings > System > Storage. From there, Cleanup recommendations can identify temporary files and other possible cleanup targets, while Storage Sense can automate some routine cleanup.
Windows needs working space during the update process, not merely enough room for the final downloaded update. Microsoft says Windows checks available storage before installation and can prompt you to free space when necessary.
Start with disposable material
Temporary files and clearly understood cleanup recommendations are safer places to begin than personal documents or unfamiliar Windows folders.
If you are considering removing large personal files, back them up or move them to suitable external storage first.
And remember that an almost-full drive is not exclusively an update problem. Windows uses storage for applications, temporary data, caches, and normal system operations.
What not to do
Do not download a mysterious PC cleaner simply because it promises to make enough space for the update.
Windows already provides tools for this job.
Bottom line: When Windows needs room to update, use Settings > System > Storage before touching anything you do not recognize.
